District 30… man, this one feels different this year.
You’ve got tradition.
You’ve got border‑city toughness.
And now you’ve got two hungry 5A programs stepping into the 6A fire ready to prove they belong.
This district stretches from Del Rio to Laredo to Southwest San Antonio — and every gym in between is about to feel that playoff pressure.
Let’s talk about it.
The New Era of District 30
This district already had a reputation for gritty, physical basketball. Laredo schools don’t back down from anybody, Del Rio always brings size and discipline, and Eagle Pass plays with that “you’re not outworking us” mentality.
But now?
Two new challengers enter the ring:
Southwest Legacy
The 5A Region IV District 28 champions.
A program that’s been building momentum year after year.
They’re not just moving up — they’re coming in with playoff expectations and a chip on their shoulder.
Legacy plays fast, confident, and connected. They’ve tasted postseason success, and they’re not shy about wanting more. Moving from 5A to 6A is a jump, but this group is built for challenges.
Southwest High School
The Dragons missed the playoffs by one game last season — and that stung.
This is a program used to going 2–3 rounds deep in 5A. They know what winning feels like, and they know what heartbreak feels like.
Now they’re stepping into 6A with something to prove.
New district.
New opponents.
Same playoff hunger.
The Established Powers
The Laredo schools aren’t just welcoming the newcomers — they’re guarding their territory.
Laredo United South
This is the team with the swagger, the size, and the system. They’ve been the most consistent threat in the district, and they’re loaded again.
Del Rio
Del Rio plays disciplined basketball. They defend, they rebound, and they don’t beat themselves. That alone keeps them in every game.
Laredo Alexander
Alexander is always dangerous. They’ve got athletes, shooters, and a style that can give anybody problems.
The message from the established programs is clear:
“We’re not giving up our playoff spots without a fight.”
Eric Talley’s Preseason Top Five
These are my picks — not predictions, not guarantees — just the early pulse of the district.
- Laredo United South
The most complete team on paper. Experience + talent + culture. - Del Rio
Consistency matters, and Del Rio brings it every year. - Southwest
The Dragons are motivated, battle‑tested, and ready to bounce back. - Southwest Legacy
The newcomers with championship DNA. They’re not scared of 6A. - Laredo Alexander
High ceiling, dangerous roster, and a style that travels.

Final Word
District 30 is going to be wild this year.
New rivalries.
New playoff paths.
New energy.
Legacy and Southwest are stepping into a district full of tradition, toughness, and pride — and the established programs aren’t planning on letting anything slide.
But that’s why we love high school basketball.
Nothing is guaranteed.
Everything is earned.
These are just preseason picks — games still have to be played, and somebody always surprises us.
