Spurs Coaching Staff Opens Doors to the Community with First-Ever Free Clinic at Frost Bank Center

On October 4, 2025, the San Antonio Spurs made history—not with a buzzer-beater or a playoff push, but with a powerful gesture of connection. For the first time ever, the Spurs coaching staff, led by Head Coach Mitch Johnson, hosted a free coaching clinic at the Frost Bank Center, welcoming over 800 coaches from across the region into the heart of Spurs basketball.

This wasn’t just a clinic—it was a statement.

A Full-Court Press on Community Engagement

Coach Johnson, known for his cerebral approach to the game and his commitment to player development, made it clear: this event was about giving back to those who give so much. From YMCA volunteers to AAU strategists, middle school mentors to college tacticians, the turnout was a testament to the deep roots basketball has in the San Antonio community. Over 1,100 coaches registered, and 800 showed up, eager to learn from the minds behind one of the NBA’s most respected franchises.

Learning from the Best

The clinic featured two masterclasses:

  • Associate Coach Sean Sweeney broke down defensive schemes, offering insights into the Spurs’ philosophy on rotations, help-side principles, and transition defense.
  • Director of Player Development Mike Noyes delivered a hands-on session on drills to elevate team development, focusing on skill progression, accountability, and building culture through reps.

The crowd was locked in—note-taking, nodding, and soaking up every word. One coach from a local high school said, “This opportunity was awesome. I’ve never seen this from the Spurs organization! Super excited to be part of this event and hope to see more!”

Another added, “Today’s event was priceless. I’m just glad I got the opportunity to be part of it.”

Partners in Purpose

The event was powered by a collaboration with Positive Coaching Alliance, reinforcing the Spurs’ commitment to character-driven leadership. ProBallers Ultra Premier Energy Drink sponsored the clinic, fueling the day with high energy and high impact.

Each coach received a Spurs × Wilson padfolio, a credential, and a Spurs Coaches lanyard—small tokens that carried big meaning. And as a bonus, attendees were invited to stay for the Black/Silver Scrimmage, offering a glimpse into the team’s preseason chemistry.

Special Shoutouts

A heartfelt nod goes to Coach Monty Williams and the TMI players, who participated in the on-court demonstrations. Their presence added authenticity and depth to the drills, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

More Than Basketball

This clinic wasn’t just about X’s and O’s—it was about building bridges. It showcased the Spurs’ desire to be more than a team that plays in San Antonio; they want to be a team that belongs to San Antonio.

Coach Johnson’s vision was clear: empower the educators, uplift the mentors, and celebrate the game’s grassroots. If today was any indication, the Spurs are just getting started.

Thanking everyone for the support!

Stay tuned. The Spurs aren’t just coaching basketball—they’re coaching community.
