Thursday night lights delivered an instant classic in Schertz, as the Alamo Heights Mules pulled off a dramatic 33-30 victory over the Clemens Buffaloes, sealed by a clutch 35-yard field goal with just :03 seconds left on the clock.From the opening kickoff, both teams traded defensive stops before Clemens struck first. On a gutsy 4th-and-3, the Buffs found #2 on a screen pass for a 20-yard touchdown to take a 7-0 lead with 2:00 left in the 1st.
Alamo Heights responded quickly behind a big kickoff return from #47, setting up a drive capped by DK Garza’s 17-yard TD run, knotting the game at 7 early in the 2nd quarter.
Clemens answered with two strong completions to Christian Dupree, but had to settle for a field goal, regaining the lead at 10-7. On the next series, Clemens’ special teams made a huge play, blocking a punt to set up shop at the AH 9-yard line. But the Mules’ defense came up big when Lee Brockwell jumped a route for an interception at the goal line, flipping momentum.
The Mules managed to tie it 10-10 with a field goal, but Clemens’ Isaiah Perez broke loose for a 43-yard TD. After a missed PAT, it was 16-10 Buffs. Alamo Heights leaned on Garza again, as he punched in a 2-yard TD run to take a 17-16 lead with under 2 minutes left in the half.
Right before the break, Clemens struck back, as #29 broke free on a 25-yard TD on 4th-and-4 to go up 22-17 at halftime.
The back-and-forth action continued in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Garza scored again from 12 yards out to make it 23-22 Mules, but Clemens regained momentum when Dupree hauled in a 35-yard reception and #29 converted the 2-point try, pushing the Buffs ahead 30-23 with 5:45 left.
Alamo Heights refused to quit. Garza broke free for his fourth touchdown of the night, a 55-yard sprint right up the middle, tying the game at 30-30 with just 3 minutes remaining.
After a Clemens punt, Landon Balldin’s 25-yard return set the Mules up at the Buffaloes’ 36. With the clock winding down, Alamo Heights stalled at the 24-yard line, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
With only three seconds left, the Mules drilled a 35-yard field goal, securing a thrilling 33-30 road victory.
