Cougars Triumph over Pirates in UIL Boys 3A Region IV Regional Championship

In a thrilling showdown at Seguin HS Leslie Goldie Harris Gym, the Cole Cougars emerged victorious over the Poth Pirates in the UIL Boys 3A Region IV Regional Championship. The game, which showcased the talent and determination of both teams, kept fans on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer.

The Poth Pirates, led by a formidable group of seniors, had displayed stellar performances in the Regional Quarters and Semifinals to earn their spot in the championship game. With a record of 22-5 overall and 7-1 in district, the Pirates were poised to make history. On the other side, the Cole Cougars entered the game with an impressive record of 31-9 overall and a flawless 10-0 record in district play, indicating their dominance throughout the season.

The game started with both teams feeling each other out, resulting in a low-scoring first quarter with the Cougars trailing narrowly at 5 points to the Pirates’ 6. Senior standout James Livingston faced early foul trouble, limiting his playing time in the first half. However, the Pirates managed to build a seven-point lead, heading into halftime with a score of 26-19, fueled by junior Nick Neudorfer’s impressive performance, leading all scorers with 10 points.

As the game progressed into the third quarter, Livingston found his rhythm, contributing 12 crucial points for the Pirates while making significant defensive plays. Despite the Pirates’ strong efforts, the Cougars clawed their way back into the game, seizing the lead by the end of the third quarter.

The Cole Cougars, boasting their own roster of talented seniors, demonstrated resilience and determination throughout the game. Senior Ajian Hasindaratina’s offensive prowess, coupled with senior Kenny Atunrase’s dominance on the boards, proved instrumental in keeping the Cougars within striking distance.

Having overcome formidable opponents in the Quarterfinals and Semifinals, including a redemption victory over London, who had knocked them out of the tournament the previous year, the Cougars entered the championship game with a sense of purpose.

In a nail-biting finish, the Cole Cougars managed to hold off a late surge from the Poth Pirates, securing a hard-fought 46-43 victory and clinching the UIL Boys 3A Region IV Regional Championship title. The win was a testament to the Cougars’ resilience, teamwork, and unwavering determination to succeed.

As both teams reflect on their remarkable journeys throughout the tournament, the Cole Cougars will now set their sights on the ultimate prize as they advance to the next stage of the competition, carrying the hopes of their school and community with them.
