The Poth Pirates secured a hard-fought victory over the Marion Bulldogs tonight in the Class 3A Regional Quarterfinals, advancing with a final score of 70-59. In a game dominated by seniors, the Pirates’ experience proved too much for the Bulldogs.
Leading the charge for Poth was Bryce Burke, who poured in a game-high 20 points. A true offensive weapon, Bryce Burke scored from all over the court, putting up 10 points in each half. Adding crucial support was Aidan DeHoyos, who finished with 16 points. While Aidan’s scoring was steady throughout, his biggest impact came in the final quarter where he went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line, effectively icing the game for the Pirates.
Another key contributor for Poth was Nathan Guevara, whose 14 points were instrumental in establishing a 10-point lead at the half (39-27). His strong first-half performance set the tone for the Pirates’ victory.
Marion refused to go down without a fight, led by their own star Braeden Fleming who racked up an impressive 24 points. Braeden’s relentless effort kept the Bulldogs within striking distance throughout the game. However, the Pirates’ balanced scoring and clutch free throws ultimately proved too much to overcome.
With this win, the Poth Pirates advance to the Regional Semifinals, where they will face the Goliad Tigers today at 5:00 pm at Seguin High School. The Pirates will look to continue their senior-led dominance and secure a spot in the Regional Finals to face the winner of Cole vs London.
