San Antonio, TX – March 9, 2024
In a battle of titans, the Plano East Panthers (39-0) capped off a perfect season with a 53-41 victory over the Round Rock Stony Point Tigers (38-2) to claim the UIL Boys Basketball 6A State Championship title. This marks the first time in UIL history that a 6A team has finished undefeated and captured the championship trophy.
The championship rematch between these two powerhouses lived up to the hype. Plano East, who handed Stony Point their only loss back in December, jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, ending it 15-11. Their relentless pressure defense forced turnovers and helped them build a 12-point advantage in the second quarter.
Stony Point, led by senior leader Josiah Mosley, refused to go down without a fight. Mosley willed his team back into the game, closing the gap to three points with just over three minutes left in the first half. Macharold Goodlet also chipped in with key baskets to keep the Tigers within striking distance. The halftime score remained close, with Plano East holding a 29-24 lead.
The third quarter saw a defensive slugfest, with both teams exchanging baskets. DJ Hall and Jordan Mizell led the charge for Plano East, combining for eight points, while Mosley continued to be a thorn in their side for Stony Point. The Panthers held a narrow 12-11 edge in the quarter.
The turning point came in the final frame. Plano East’s balanced attack proved too much for the Tigers. With a comfortable 10-point lead, the Panthers never looked back, securing their place in history. Hall, who finished with a game-high 18 points, 6 rebounds, and a block, was named the Player of the Game. Rachard Angton chipped in with a crucial 13 points off the bench for the champions.
For Stony Point, Mosley put on a valiant effort, finishing with a double-double of 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 assists. Macharold Goodlet Jr. and Davaughn Hueitt also contributed offensively with 8 points each. Despite the loss, Mosley’s performance solidified his reputation as a top Texas prospect, with Villanova University welcoming him to their program next season. Mac Goodlet will continue his basketball journey at DBU.
Plano East’s undefeated season is a testament to their dedication, talent, and coaching. Their championship victory will be etched in UIL history, inspiring future generations of Texas high school basketball players.
